ElggCampBA 2009 – A huge success!Farmsphere

ElggCamp BA 2009
Farmsphere wants to thank all those who attended and supported this two-day business and technology meeting.

First of all, we would like to highlight the presence of Brett Profitt on behalf of Elgg, with whom we shared a week of hard work and enriching experiences.

The event that took place on Thursday 19 November in Las Cañitas – Buenos Aires – started with opening words by Farmsphere CMO, Sebastian Nader.

The first part of the meeting consisted of a presentation of the Elgg tool and its potentialities by Pedro Prez, CEO of Keetup, an Elgg developer company leader in the Spanish-speaking market.

After that, Brett Profitt talked about the future of the Open Source platform, leader in the development of social networks.

Next came Sebastian San Juan, COO of Farmsphere, currently the most ambitious business and professional network project specialized in the field of Food and Agribusiness around the world. Farmsphere also leads the most outstanding research and development lines within the Elgg community.

The day was closed by Susana Cipriota and Lucila Campos, founders of Condiminds, a company specialized in Organizational Communication through the use of social network platforms. Their presentation dealt with the opportunities and benefits brought about by the creation of a space of direct bidirectional communication with diverse institutional audiences: B2E, B2B and B2C.

The meeting carried out on Friday 20, in our offices in San Telmo, was dedicated to Sprint Code. Around twenty local programmers held a whole online working day, via streaming, with specialists from all over the world, with the aim of improving the programming code’s performance.

10 WordPress Plugins to Help Build Community

wordpressJessica Faye Carter is an award-winning author and columnist. Her company, Nette Media develops social media technologies for women and multicultural communities, and she blogs at Technicultr.

The expression of community has changed considerably since the emergence of social media technologies, but its basic foundation — the notion of individuals exchanging information, ideas, and opinions — remains firmly intact. Today, one of the most widely-used tools in developing these types of exchanges online is WordPress, the popular blogging and publishing platform. Part of its appeal is the ease with which users can build advanced functionality into their sites with plugins. If you’re interested in building a community around your site, there are plenty of third-party add-ons that can help create one.

These 10 WordPress plugins add features that will help you to engage your user base.

Highlight Your Best Content

featured

1. Featured Content Gallery – If you’re not an expert in programming or design, Featured Content Gallery makes it easy to highlight images, posts, or pages anywhere on your site. It comes with a sleek and contemporary design that is fully customizable through the WordPress dashboard, so that you can integrate your highlighted content seamlessly with the rest of your site.

2. Popularity Contest – Your users will want to know what’s popular and interesting to their peers in the community and the Popularity Contest Plugin can help. It keeps track of the most popular posts and pages on your site and acts as a leaderboard that directs users to the most active content in your community. You can customize the point values assigned to user actions on the site, such as comments or views, and display the results easily in a widgetized-sidebar.

Facilitate User Engagement

3. Viper’s Video Quicktags – Including video in your community is easy using Viper’s Video Quicktags. Just enter the URL of the video in the prompt box and see a preview of the video right on your screen. Then specify the dimensions and other customizations you’d like to add and see your final product before saving it into your post. Supported video sites include YouTube, Google Video, Vimeo and others.

4. WPtouch – Part of keeping the community vibrant means letting your users take it with them. You can go mobile with your community using WPtouch and avoid building a mobile website or the costs of developing an iPhone application. You can control the mobile user interface by allowing the browser to automatically route users to the interface of your choosing — your site or the WPtouch interface, which looks similar to an iPhone app. You can also show or hide post excerpts and customize the icons and general appearance of your mobile site.

5. Disqus Comment System – Nothing stops a potential commenter in their tracks faster than having to set up a user ID and password in order to leave a message on your site. At the same time, most of us would like some sort of authentication process we can use to identify and correspond with other users as we develop our communities. The Disqus Comment System allows users to engage with your site using their Twitter, Disqus, Facebook, OpenID or selected other accounts. This prevents users from having to set up new accounts while allowing for authentication. Bonus: the Reactions feature allows you to include the social component of user feedback into your comments.

6. Customize Your Community – Customize Your Community (CYC) provides some useful options for those building communities in WordPress. It allows you to re-brand the WordPress pages for registration, logging in/out, and lost passwords, as well as the user profile pages. In addition to giving your community a standardized look and feel, CYC helps with a long-standing navigational issue in WordPress: it automatically directs “subscribers” to their profiles and bypasses the WP backend entirely.

Measure on the Fly

metrics

7. Clicky – While Google Analytics provides you with a long-term perspective on your site metrics, Clicky gives you instantaneous feedback. The dashboard includes traditional site metrics, but also offers cool features, like “Spy”, which pinpoints the location of current visitors on a map. It’s an easy way to get a snapshot of your site’s current activity and, in conjunction with Google Analytics, gives you a comprehensive overview of your site’s activity.

Improve User Navigation

8. Breadcrumb NavXT – Your users aren’t exactly Hansel and Gretel, but they still may occasionally need help navigating your site, particularly if it’s content-heavy. Breadcrumbs are usually located just below a site’s primary navigation system and look something like this:

Home » Dance Music » Saint Etienne » Method of Modern Love

Breadcrumb NavXT, the successor to Breadcrumb Navigation XT, improves your site’s navigation by building this kind of virtual breadcrumb trail for your users to follow. This way, users will know where they’re located on your site. This plugin may require customization, depending on your theme; check out the Advanced Options section of the plugin’s homepage for additional instructions.

Monetize It!

advertising

9. Advertising Manager – If you were previously using the Adsense Manager plugin, you’ve probably noticed that it hasn’t been updated in a while. That’s because it has been succeeded by Advertising Manager, which is recommended unless you are using WordPress version 2.5 or earlier. The renamed version supports a broader group of ad networks in addition to Google AdSense, such as Adify, AdBrite, and several others. It also imports your AdSense Manager settings, for users of the previous plugin.

10. WP125 – Do you prefer a more hands-on management style for your advertising? WP125 allows you to do everything from arranging the ad display so that it fits your site design to setting timelines for ads (they can be removed automatically or manually at expiration). It also provides a placeholder for empty ad space, which you can switch to your own customized version.

Do you have another plugin that’s been helpful to you in building your community? Share your favorites in the comments below.

Google Latitude, now with Location History & Alerts

[Cross-posted from the Google Mobile Blog]

Since the launch of Google Latitude earlier this year, we’ve been getting a lot of feature requests. One of the most popular ideas was for Latitude to keep track of location history, allowing you (but not your friends) to see where you’ve been at any point in time. Another popular idea was to notify you when you’re near your Latitude friends so you can easily meet up or grab lunch. Today, we’re happy to introduce both Google Location History and Google Location Alerts (beta) to let you do even more with Latitude.

Google Location History
Whether you’re taking a road trip across the country, backpacking across Europe, or just going out for a night on the town, it’s fascinating to look back at where you went, and for how long you stayed. Enable Google Location History to store, view, and manage your past Latitude locations. You can visualize your history on Google Maps and Earth or play back a recent trip in order. Of course, you can always delete selected history or your entire location history at any time. While working on Location History, I found myself going back in time to discover things that would have otherwise been impossible. For example, I stopped at an awesome BBQ place on my way back from Lake Tahoe this summer, but I couldn’t remember the name when my friend was asking about it a few months later. I pulled up my location history for that weekend, found where I was stationary on the drive home, and the restaurant name showed up in Google Maps: Drooling Dog Bar BQ. Check it out below:

Google Location Alerts (beta)
People also want to know when their friends were nearby, but it’s not always convenient to keep checking Latitude to see if a friend has recently shown up near you. After working on this for a while, we realized it wasn’t as straightforward as sending a notification every time Latitude friends were near each other. Imagine that you’re Latitude friends with your roommate or co-workers. It would get pretty annoying to get a text message every single time you walked in the door at home or pulled into work. To avoid this, we decided to make Location Alerts smarter by requiring that you also enable Location History. Using your past location history, Location Alerts can recognize your regular, routine locations and not create alerts when you’re at places like home or work. Alerts will only be sent to you and any nearby friends when you’re either at an unusual place or at a routine place at an unusual time. Keep in mind that it may take up to a week to learn your “unusual” locations and start sending alerts.

To enable these features, go to google.com/latitude/apps. You must first be an existing Google Latitude user; if you’re not already, sign up here. You must explicitly enable each feature, and of course, you can disable it at any time. Learn more in the Help Center about Location Alerts and Location History, suggest and vote on ideas in the Mobile Product Ideas page, or report problems in the Mobile Help Forum.

GO: Google Launches Its Own Programming Language

One of the core philosophies of Google, and one of the reasons it has been so successful, is efficiency. It’s about both being as efficient as possible when serving search results and processing data and creating product that push the limits of efficiency for the user (as an example, Google’s trying to make communication more efficient with Google Wave).

Maybe that’s why we’re not surprised that Google is finally looking to tackle the underpinning code that runs the web. Today the search giant released Go, an open-source development language that Google believes will combine performance with speed, and one that the company probably hopes will reshape the development and software industries in its favor.

Go is based on the C programming family, one of the most widely used programming language trees in the world. However, the twist is that incorporates elements of Python (a preferred development language within Google) and the Pascal/Modula/Oberon family to make faster and more dynamic programs.

Why Did Google Make Its Own Language?

In its Go FAQ, Google explains the main motivations behind the project:

“No major systems language has emerged in over a decade, but over that time the computing landscape has changed tremendously. There are several trends:

- Computers are enormously quicker but software development is not faster.

- Dependency management is a big part of software development today but the “header files” of languages in the C tradition are antithetical to clean dependency analysis—and fast compilation.

- There is a growing rebellion against cumbersome type systems like those of Java and C++, pushing people towards dynamically typed languages such as Python and JavaScript.

- Some fundamental concepts such as garbage collection and parallel computation are not well supported by popular systems languages.

- The emergence of multicore computers has generated worry and confusion.”

Summary: Google believes that the web and computing have changed dramatically in the last ten years, but the languages powering that computing have not. But when you get down to it, Google could benefit a great deal from not only having a more efficient programming language, but having one it designed being used in thousands web and software apps.

If you want to learn more, Google (as usual) has released a detailed, hour-long Google Tech Talk on the new language (embedded below). However, if you’re a developer and just want to get started, we suggest checking out the Go Tutorial and writing your first program.

How Social Media is Taking the News Local

newspaper-keyboardAny news organization’s web site can get a story picked up by popular sites such as Drudge Report, Huffington Post, Digg, or even Fark, resulting in a bump in page views. But that’s a traffic anomaly. A key metric media companies want to grow is their local audience, because local traffic is where the money is.

“Local advertising pays the bills in most cases and local advertisers want to reach people who can actually come to their stores,” said Serra Media CEO Mark Briggs, author of “Journalism 2.0,” and the upcoming book “Journalism Next,” in an e-mail interview. “And, as national news has become a commodity, local news is the differentiating factor most local news operations are emphasizing these days. Or, at least they should be.”

Local media companies are working with social media tools and user-generated content contributors to expand their local reach.

“I sense an inevitability is setting in with media companies with regard to social media. Those that thought … it was a fad that would quickly fade away are beginning to resolve themselves to the cold reality that social media is here to stay and will have to play a role in news coverage and audience building for a long time to come,” Briggs said.

The “Unbrand” Approach

Attracting local audiences can be a matter of launching a new, separately branded site with a targeted topic or geographic reach.

That’s what the Chicago Tribune Media Group did in August, when it launched ChicagoNow, a local blog hub dubbed a “new web site created by Chicagoans for Chicagoans.”

Bill Adee, editor for digital media for the Chicago Tribune, told me the Tribune has a huge local audience but there are certain areas they don’t index well. With ChicagoNow, he said, they wanted to focus on blogs, topics and people that visitors don’t get from ChicagoTribune.com. The site has just over 120 local blogs so far and Adee said the Tribune uses its other brands to promote the new site and its bloggers.

For example, he pointed out that if the Tribune’s cable TV station needs an expert on the Chicago Transit authority, they have one. “That’s something we can offer that a lot of other properties can’t,” he said.

ChicagoNow bloggers are paid $5 per 1,000 local page views, according to Adee, who said they focus their bloggers on Facebook and Twitter and encourage them to comment on other ChicagoNow blogs. About every month or so the site hosts a party so everyone can meet the new bloggers. The site had 1 million unique visitors in September and 45% were local — double what they expected to have at this point in the site’s development and they’ve hit every page view goal so far, he said.

“I think it’s gone beyond my wildest dreams so far,” he said.

Neighborhood News Coverage

seattle-blog

Early last year, journalists Cory Bergman and his wife, Kate, started a Seattle-area neighborhood network of news blogs called Next Door Media, which won the Online News Association’s first Community Collaboration award in 2009.

Cory Bergman said in an e-mail interview that about 80% of their stories come from their neighbors and what they post in the blogs’ forums, comments, e-mail, Facebook and Twitter. Experienced journalists who live in the neighborhood cover stories they find via those methods, using traditional journalism skills to gather and confirm information. When the stories are posted to the blogs, a hat tip is given to the user who originated the idea.

“In essence, we’re providing a layer of journalism over an empowered community. It’s a neighborhood answer service, rooted in journalism,” he said. Bergman said when it comes to breaking news, because the writers live in the neighborhoods they cover, they often beat traditional local news media to the scene. When a house fire broke out recently, they received seven e-mails and two photos in 15 minutes, he said.

He also added that Facebook and Twitter have been instrumental in helping Next Door Media get the word out about their sites, especially as they expand to new neighborhoods. MyBallard.com gets 600,000 monthly page views and 50,000 unique users and 95% of the traffic is from Seattle, which is “significantly higher than an average local news site and the engagement numbers are off the charts,” he said.

The company’s success is two-fold, according to Bergman. Editors care about their communities and go the extra mile to provide local news coverage that traditional media companies are increasingly unable to cover, he said, and also the site is not afraid to trust its neighborhoods.

He pointed out that launching successful sites isn’t easy and recommends news organizations partner with promising neighborhood sites rather than competing with them.

“Hyperlocal is a lot of work. There’s no magic formula. We’ve invested a lot of time in covering stories, attending community meetings and introducing ourselves to just about everyone. It’s about people and relationships and trust, not just code. It takes patience, which is rare quality these days,” he said.

Going Viral Locally

derusha-tweet

Internet memes can spread fast using social media, and news topics are no exception. What started out as crowdsourcing for a news story morphed into a local meme in the Twin Cities when WCCO-TV reporter Jason DeRusha, asked his followers on Twitter how someone gets an official day designated for them. He tweeted: “It’s National Cheesecake Day. How do you get a ‘day’ anyway? Good Question at 10. (Anyone have power to declare DeRusha Day?).”

That’s when the meme began. DeRusha didn’t anticipate how quickly the “DeRusha Day” movement would snowball. A Twitter user started a #DeRushaDay hashtag, and then someone created a poster, another person launched a web site and someone else started online petition devoted to the cause, which were all tweeted about. The end result? Sept. 21 was officially proclaimed DeRusha Day by the mayor’s office and a party marked the event.

So the viral nature of social media inadvertently spread among Twin Citians an idea that was closely tied to WCCO’s brand. How can others duplicate this success? Certainly going where your readers/listeners and viewers are is a start. Then you must regularly engage with locals in that social media space in a two-way conversation, rather than simply push out content. In DeRusha’s case, he uses social media in the story gathering process, often talking about the stories he works on and getting feedback from fans and followers. On TV he invites viewers to go to his blog and then discusses news stories there with them.

“I’m really interested in closing the loop between online fans, who follow me in the process, and TV viewers,” he said. “How do I get those web people to tune into the TV at ten? I try to put those people on TV. That seems to help.”

derusha-day

John Daenzer, WCCO’s director of new media, said in an e-mail interview the station’s use of social media has absolutely helped grow its local online audience. “We wouldn’t be as aggressive as we are about engaging in all sorts of social media if we thought otherwise. And we work very hard to ensure that when we use social media we’re not just pumping out promotional garbage. We also want to participate in the conversation and give folks new ways to connect with each other,” he said.

Facebook referrals to WCCO.com surged 1,287% in August and 1,082% in September over the same period last year, according to Daenzer’s data. Twitter referrals for August were up 1,029% over August 2008.

Keeping a Local Focus

statesman-twitter

Austin-American Statesman social media editor Robert Quigley has been the voice behind @statesman on Twitter since 2008. He also tweets for @hookemfans, the Twitter account for the Statesman’s football fan site Hookem.com, which relies heavily on aggregation and social media.

“Growing local audience is our local bread and butter,” Quigley said in an e-mail interview. “Our marketing department, through ads you can find on YouTube and many other campaigns, has been highlighting the work we’ve been doing online and in print. We’re making sure we understand and are serving that community through Statesman.com and Austin360.com.”

He keeps a focus on quality local content. His consistent highlighting of Statesman’s content, engagement in dialogue with the audience and crowdsourcing is also paying off. Facebook and Twitter are both in the top 10 in referring traffic to the newspaper’s sites, according to Quigley, who tweets about every 45 minutes Monday through Friday, but tweets more often when news is happening. He also typically updates the Statesman’s Facebook Fan page a few times a day with stories, photo galleries or videos.

Quigley said newspapers and other corporate brands should use social media as a two-way communication tool. “I follow back most people who follow us, which I think shows a level of engagement (and allows me to receive news tips privately through direct messages),” he said.
